Most people never think about the mineral content of their water until it starts leaving evidence, and by then it has usually been at work for a while. The good news is that the signs of hard water are clear and recognizable, showing up both around the house and on your body. So what does hard water do once it reaches your home? Here are seven of the most reliable signs, the chemistry behind each one, and how to confirm what your water is actually made of.
What Is Water Hardness, and Why It Matters
So what is water hardness? It is simply a measure of how much dissolved calcium and magnesium your water carries, picked up as rain and groundwater move through limestone and dolomite on the way to your tap. It is measured in milligrams per liter (mg/L) or grains per gallon (GPG). The U.S. Geological Survey calls water soft below 60 mg/L, moderately hard between 61 and 120, hard between 121 and 180, and very hard above 180.
Here is the part that surprises people. The EPA has never set a legal limit for hardness, because calcium and magnesium are not toxic to drink. That regulatory silence is often read as reassurance, but it only means utilities are not required to flag hardness as a problem, even when it is high enough to visibly coat your fixtures and measurably change your hair and skin. So the signs fall into two groups: what you see around the house, and what you feel on your body. Both come from the same chemistry.
Sign 1: Your Hair Feels Rough, Dull, or Hard to Detangle After Washing
The texture change most people blame on a bad shampoo or a bad haircut is often the water. Hair does not just get rinsed by hard water; it absorbs the minerals in it. A 2011 study found that hair takes up calcium and magnesium directly into the fiber, and that already-damaged hair absorbs even more (Evans et al., 2011). Under a scanning electron microscope, hair washed in hard water shows a rough, ruffled surface carrying roughly three times the calcium of hair washed in pure water (Srinivasan & Rangachari, 2016).
That buildup lifts the cuticle, the layer of overlapping scales that normally lies flat and smooth. Once those scales are raised, strands catch against each other instead of sliding, light scatters instead of reflecting, and hair feels rough, dull, and coated. The timing is the giveaway: the change appears right after washing and eases when you travel somewhere with softer water. Sign 2: Your Skin Feels Tight, Dry, or Itchy Right After Showering
If your skin feels tight or itchy the moment you step out, not before and not hours later, the water is a likely cause. Two things are happening at once. First, when soap meets hard water, calcium reacts with it to form a film that does not rinse away cleanly. In a controlled study, skin washed with soap in hard water was measurably drier, redder, and less hydrated than skin washed in pure water, with the soap residue clinging to the surface (Warren et al., 1996). Second, hard water is alkaline, which pushes the skin off its slightly acidic natural balance and weakens its ability to hold moisture. A population study of more than 1,300 infants linked higher domestic water hardness to greater water loss through the skin and a higher risk of eczema (Perkin et al., 2016).

Sign 3: Soap and Shampoo Don't Lather the Way They Should
If you find yourself using more shampoo than the bottle suggests and still not feeling clean, it is almost certainly the water rather than the product. Soap works by forming the tiny structures that lift away oils and create lather. In hard water, calcium and magnesium react with the soap first and turn it into an insoluble residue before it can do its job. In effect, hard water uses up your soap, so you need more of it to get the same result, and the leftover residue settles on your skin, your hair, and your shower walls instead of rinsing away. Sign 4: White or Chalky Deposits on Faucets, Showerheads, and Kettles
The crusty white buildup around your faucet bases, across your showerhead nozzles, and inside your kettle is limescale, which is calcium carbonate left behind when hard water evaporates. The minerals stay dissolved while the water is liquid, then crystallize onto the surface as it dries. The showerhead is the most telling spot, because it sits exactly where the water meets your body: if scale is visibly building on the nozzles, the same mineral load is landing on your hair and skin every time you shower. The speed of buildup is informative too. If deposits return within a few weeks of cleaning, your water is meaningfully hard, and scale inside the nozzles will also restrict flow and dull your water pressure over time.
Sign 5: Soap Scum on Your Shower Walls Is Hard to Remove
The stubborn film on glass doors and tile is not a cleaning failure, and it is chemically different from limescale. This is soap scum, the same calcium-and-soap residue from Sign 3, and because it is greasy and insoluble it smears rather than rinses. During the rinse and dry, dissolved minerals settle between the fabric fibers as the water evaporates, leaving clothes stiff and board-like, dulling their color, and wearing them down over time. Sign 7: Your Annual Water Quality Report Lists Hardness Data
If you want to know for certain how to tell if you have hard water, the most definitive way is a document you probably already have access to. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, every public water utility in the U.S. must publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report, usually posted on the utility's website under "Water Quality" or "Reports." Look for total hardness, calcium hardness, or "hardness as CaCO₃," listed in mg/L. To convert that number to grains per gallon, divide by 17.1: a reading of 120 mg/L is 7 GPG (hard), and 180 mg/L is about 10.5 GPG (very hard). What to Do If You Have Hard Water, Starting With the Shower
Once you know how hard your water is, the right response to these hard water problems depends on their scope. A whole-house ion exchange softener removes calcium and magnesium from every tap, producing water that is soft by every measure, but it requires professional installation, ongoing salt, and adds sodium to your water. A template-assisted crystallization system changes how the minerals crystallize so they stop sticking to pipes and fixtures, which protects plumbing but does little for hair and skin.
At the shower itself, a point-of-use filter targets the two things that reach your body during a wash.
